We would like to inform you that the fifth Call for Book Chapters of “Geographies of the Anthropocene” series is intended to become a collective and multilingual volume titled: “The Anthropocene and islands: vulnerability, adaptation and resilience to natural hazards and climate change” (Languages: English, Spanish, French and Italian).
Scope
Populated islands are especially vulnerable territories to the threat of natural hazards. Risk has been constant presence throughout the historical evolution of islands and the human communities which live upon them. Such risks have provoked the need for measures to adapt and recover from impacts of natural hazards; mitigations that evolve with societal, political and economical fluctuations. Recently, anthropogenic climate change has increased the threats of natural hazards and their related risks. In this regard, new measures will be needed to overcome vulnerability or to resurrect forgotten measures from the past.
This volume aims to seek contributions regarding the variety of natural hazards and the mitigations which were and are being developed to cope with vulnerabilities affecting populations living on islands, to improve social resilience and reduce risk. On the other hand, climate change hazards and their effects should be studied, to identify possible measures to reduce potential vulnerabilities; mitigations which adapt, and prepare for possible scenarios in the near future.
The main themes of the volume, even if others can be presented if interesting, could be:
- Risks from the past: impacts and theoretical and practiced adaptation measures from official policies or popular societal answers.
- Climate change: impact of temperature increase, sea level rise and the higher climate variability from societal and economical points of view.
- Measures and actions of prevention, mitigation and adaptation to climate change effects on islands.
- Future impact scenarios and political proposals intended to correct future damages.
- Societal perception of climate change impacts: media polls as a way to analyze the situation as perceived by islands inhabitants.
- Transdisciplinary perspectives integrating literary, cultural and historical geographies of islands with geoscience and GIS approaches to natural hazards and possible mitigations.

Les informamos que la quinta convocatoria para capítulos de la colección Geographies of the Anthropocene está abierta para la publicación de un volumen titulado: Antropoceno e islas: vulnerabilidad, adaptación y resiliencia ante riesgos naturales y el cambio climático (Idiomas: inglés, español, francés, italiano).

Las islas habitadas son territorios especialmente vulnerables ante la amenaza de riesgos naturales. El riesgo ha tenido una presencia constante en la evolución histórica de las islas y de las comunidades humanas que viven en ellas. Estos riesgos han provocado la necesidad de disponer de medidas de adaptación y recuperación ante los impactos naturales, medidas que evolucionan como resultado de cambios sociales, políticos y económicos. Recientemente, el cambio climático antrópico ha incrementado las amenazas naturales y sus riesgos asociados. En este sentido, van a necesitarse nuevas medidas para superar la vulnerabilidad o bien recuperar aquellas usadas en el pasado y, a menudo, olvidadas.
Este volumen busca contribuciones relacionadas con los diferentes riesgos naturales y las medidas de mitigación que fueron y son utilizadas para paliar la vulnerabilidad de la población que habita en islas, para mejorar la resiliencia social y reducir riesgos. Por otro lado, riesgos ligados al cambio climático y sus impactos deben también ser estudiados para identificar las posibles medidas que reduzcan la potencial vulnerabilidad y que mitiguen, adapten y preparen los posibles escenarios del futuro.
Los principales temas de este volumen son:
– Riesgos del pasado: impactos así como medidas de adaptaciones teóricas y probadas tanto a nivel político como respuestas sociales populares.
– Cambio climático: impacto del incremento de temperatura, la subida del nivel del mar y el incremento de variabilidad climática desde el punto de vista social y económico.
– Medidas y actuaciones de prevención, mitigación y adaptación a los efectos del cambio climático en islas.
– Futuros escenarios de impacto y propuestas políticas tendentes a la corrección de daños.
– Percepción social del impacto del cambio climático: las encuestas como método para analizar la situación percibida por los habitantes de las islas.

Nous vous informons que le cinquième appel de la collection Géographies de l’Anthropocène est ouvert pour la publication d’un volume intitulé: L’Anthropocène et les îles: vulnerabilité, adaptation et résilience aux aléas naturels et au changement climatique (Langues: anglais, espagnol, français, italien).
Description
Les îles peuplées sont des territoires particulièrement vulnérables à la menace des aléas naturels. Le risque a été une présence constante tout au long de l’évolution historique des îles et des communautés humaines qui y vivent. Ces risques ont entraîné la nécessité de prendre des mesures pour s’adapter aux catastrophes naturelles et se remettre des conséquences de telles catastrophes; des mesures d’atténuation qui évoluent avec les fluctuations sociales, politiques et économiques. Récemment, les changements climatiques anthropiques ont accru les menaces de catastrophes naturelles et les risques qu’y sont liés. À cet égard, de nouvelles mesures seront nécessaires pour surmonter la vulnérabilité ou ressusciter des mesures oubliées du passé.
Ce volume vise à recueillir des contributions concernant la diversité des risques naturels et les mesures d’atténuation mises en place pour faire face aux vulnérabilités des populations vivant dans les îles, améliorer la résilience sociale et réduire les risques. D’autre part, les dangers du changement climatique et leurs effets devraient être étudiés afin d’identifier les mesures possibles pour réduire les vulnérabilités potentielles; des mesures d’atténuation qui s’adapten et se préparent devant à des scénarios possibles dans un proche avenir
Les thèmes principaux du volume, même si d’autres peuvent être présentés s’ils sont intéressants, pourraient être:

Desideriamo rendere noto che la quinta Call for Book Chapters della serie “Geographies of the Anthropocene” è destinata a diventare un volume collettivo e multilingue dal titolo L’Antropocene e le isole: vulnerabilità, adattamento e resilienza ai pericoli naturali e al cambiamento climatico (Lingue: inglese, spagnolo, francese, italiano).
Descrizione e obiettivi
Le isole popolate sono territori particolarmente vulnerabili alla minaccia dei pericoli naturali. Il rischio ha rappresentato una presenza costante durante l’evoluzione storica delle isole e delle comunità umane che vivono in esse. Tali rischi hanno causato la necessità di misure per adattarsi e riprendersi dagli impatti dei pericoli naturali; mitigazioni che si evolvono con fluttuazioni sociali, politiche ed economiche. Di recente, il cambiamento climatico antropogenico ha potenziato le minacce legate ai pericoli naturali e ai relativi rischi. A questo proposito, saranno necessarie nuove misure per superare la vulnerabilità o far rinascere le misure dimenticate del passato.
Questo volume mira ad attrarre contributi sulla varietà dei pericoli naturali e sulle mitigazioni che erano e sono in fase di sviluppo per far fronte alle vulnerabilità che colpiscono le popolazioni che vivono nelle isole, per migliorare la resilienza sociale e ridurre il rischio. D’altra parte, i pericoli legati al cambiamento climatico e gli effetti ad essi correlati dovrebbero essere studiati al fine di identificare possibili misure per ridurre le potenziali vulnerabilità; mitigazioni che adattano e preparano per possibili scenari nel futuro prossimo.
I temi principali del volume, anche se ne verranno presi in considerazione anche altri, se ritenuti interessanti e pertinenti, sono i seguenti:
- Rischi del passato: impatti e misure di adattamento teoriche e praticate da politiche ufficiali o risposte popolari della società.
- Cambiamento climatico: impatto dell’aumento della temperatura, dell’innalzamento del livello del mare e della maggiore variabilità climatica dal punto di vista sociale ed economico.
- Misure e azioni di prevenzione, mitigazione e adattamento agli effetti del cambiamento climatico sulle isole.
- Scenari di impatto futuro e proposte politiche intese a correggere danni futuri.
- Percezione sociale degli impatti del cambiamento climatico: sondaggi sui media come modalità per analizzare la situazione percepita dagli abitanti delle isole.

We would like to inform you that the fourth Call for Book Chapters of “Geographies of the Anthropocene” series is intended to become a collective and multilingual volume titled: The climate crisis in Mediterranean Europe: cross-border and multidisciplinary issues on climate change (Languages: English, Spanish and Italian).
Scope:
The last PESETA III report from the Joint Research Center (JRC) of the European Commission points at the consequences of climate change effects in southern Europe, reflecting economic, environmental and social costs within the territory. Therefore, the European Union has been involved in taking measures to attempt to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 40% in 2030 according to the Paris Agreement of 2015. However, though an increasing growth of knowledge and understanding produced by the scientific community, our societies seem resistant to change and still unable to address this issue in the proper way.
Since Environmental Law to Meteorology, going through Sociology, Geography, Engineering, Economic, Anthropology or Politics, we need all disciplines to understand how Europe will be affected on all its territory and how we could effectively tackle the climate crisis. Namely, we should understand which factors are decisive for supporting or reversing inaction, driven by socio-cultural, institutional, emotional and historically reproduced patterns. Furthermore, within a Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) perspective, we should identify the root causes of different kind of vulnerabilities, sometimes hidden or implicit, to address climate change in terms of climate (in)justice production and reproduction. In this way, society can manage the new horizon of climate change and associated risks in the best possible way.
For these reasons, this volume will aim to collect contributions on the different impacts of climate change, closely linked to management policies, possible future scenarios, adaptation and mitigation policies and practices in relation to the balance of past scenarios and current climate change in Europe, especially in the Mediterranean area. The main objective that support this multidisciplinary purpose is the collection of experiences and knowledge of all research fields involved in the promotion of a certain theoretical discussion that can both help to better understand the consequences of climate change from a cross-border and transnational perspective and turn this reflection into effective climate change mitigation and adaptation applications for adequate policies and practices.
The main topics we would like to discuss in this volume, but to which we do not limit the proposals for contributions, are:
- the impacts associated with climate change as well as the increase in temperatures, the alteration of precipitation patterns or the rise in sea level;
- existing European and National policies or pending approval on climate change, mitigation and adaptation societal measures, and possible scenarios for the entire study area;
- every kind of prevention, adaptation, awareness and preparedness measures/actions supported by institutions, stakeholders and local communities to face the climate crisis;
- climate justice issues linked to possible “climate migrations” or changing in housing and infrastructures, including the use of nature-based solutions;
- risk and public communication, and social perception about the uncertainty associated with climate change, by analyzing how the different actors, including the civil society, frame the current situation and consider possible effective mitigation and adaptation solutions.
Consequently, this volume is of interest to a broad range of scientists and humanists, as well as policy makers, practitioners and environmental managers.

La crisis climática en la Europa mediterránea: cuestiones transfronterizas y multidisciplinares sobre el cambio climático

El último informe PESETA III del Centro Común de Investigación (JRC) de la Comisión Europea apunta a las consecuencias del efecto del cambio climático en el sur de Europa, plasmando costes económicos, ambientales y sociales sobre el territorio. Es por ello que la Unión Europea ha participado en la toma de medidas para intentar reducir las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero en al menos un 40% en el año 2030, de acuerdo con el Acuerdo de París de 2015. Sin embargo, y a pesar de un creciente aumento del conocimiento y la comprensión producida por la comunidad científica, nuestras sociedades parecen resistirse al cambio y aún son incapaces de abordar este problema de la manera adecuada.
Desde el Derecho Ambiental a la Meteorología, pasando por la Sociología, la Geografía, la Ingeniería, la Economía, la Antropología o la Política. Disciplinas que ayudarán a comprender cómo se verá afectada Europa en todo su territorio y cómo podemos abordar la crisis climática de manera efectiva. Concretamente se debe de trabajar para descubrir qué factores son los relevantes para sostener o desechar todo tipo de factores que también pueden atascarse en patrones socioculturales, institucionales, emocionales e históricamente reproducidos. Además, y desde la perspectiva de la Reducción del Riesgo de Desastres (DRR), debemos identificar las causas de diferentes tipos de vulnerabilidades, a veces ocultas o implícitas, para abordar el cambio climático en términos de producción y reproducción de (in)justicia climática. De esta manera, la sociedad puede gestionar el nuevo horizonte del cambio climático y los riesgos asociados de la mejor manera posible.
Por este motivo, este volumen tendrá como objetivo la recopilación de contribuciones sobre los diferentes impactos del cambio climático, estrechamente vinculados a las políticas de gestión, los posibles escenarios futuros, políticas y prácticas de adaptación y mitigación en relación ccon el equilibrio de los escenarios pasados y el cambio climático actual en Europa, especialmente en la cuenca mediterránea.
El objetivo principal que fundamenta este propósito multidisciplinar es, por tanto, la recopilación de experiencias y conocimientos de todos los campos de investigación involucrados en la promoción de cierta discusión teórica que puede ayudar a comprender mejor las consecuencias del cambio climático desde una perspectiva transnacional y transfronteriza y convertir esta reflexión en aplicaciones efectivas de mitigación y adaptación para políticas y prácticas adecuadas.
Entre las principales ideas de nuestra investigación están:
– los impactos asociados al cambio climático, tales como el aumento de las temperaturas, la alteración de los patrones de precipitación o el aumento del nivel del mar;
– las políticas europeas y estatales existentes o pendientes de aprobación sobre el cambio climático, junto a las medidas de adaptación y mitigación y posibles escenarios para toda el área de estudio;
– todo tipo de medidas y acciones de prevención, adaptación, sensibilización y preparación apoyadas por instituciones, partes interesadas y comunidades locales para enfrentar la crisis climática;
– problemas de justicia climática relacionados con posibles “migraciones climáticas” o cambios en las viviendas e infraestructuras, incluido el uso de soluciones basadas en la naturaleza;
– y el riesgo, la comunicación pública y la percepción social sobre la incertidumbre asociada al cambio climático, además de analizar cómo los diferentes actores, incluida la sociedad civil, enmarcan la situación actual y consideran posibles soluciones eficaces de mitigación y adaptación.
Por tanto, este volumen resulta de interés para una amplia gama de científicos y humanistas, así como para los encargados de formular políticas y gestionar el medio ambiente.

La crisi climatica nell’Europa Mediterranea: questioni multidisciplinari, a scala transfrontaliera, sul cambiamento climatico
Obiettivi:
L’ultimo rapporto PESETA III del Joint Research Centre (JRC) della Commissione Europea evidenzia le conseguenze degli effetti dei cambiamenti climatici nell’Europa meridionale, che riflettono costi economici, ambientali e sociali all’interno del territorio. A tal proposito, l’Unione Europea è stata coinvolta nell’adozione di misure per cercare di ridurre le emissioni di gas serra di almeno il 40% entro il 2030, seguendo l’Accordo di Parigi del 2015. Tuttavia, nonostante la costante crescita delle conoscenze, soprattutto di quelle prodotte dalla comunità scientifica, le nostre società sembrano resistere ai cambiamenti e non stanno dimostrando di essere ancora in grado di affrontare la problematica in modo adeguato.
Dal diritto ambientale alla meteorologia, passando per la sociologia, la geografia, l’ingegneria, l’economia, l’antropologia o le scienze politiche, abbiamo certamente bisogno dell’apporto di ogni disciplina per comprendere le modalità attraverso cui il territorio europeo potrebbe essere colpito e come si potrebbe affrontare la crisi climatica in modo efficace. In particolare, bisognerebbe individuare quali fattori siano determinanti per sostenere o ribaltare l’inazione, alimentata da modelli socio-culturali, istituzionali, emotivi e riprodotti storicamente. Inoltre, seguendo una prospettiva di Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), dovremmo identificare le vere cause alla radice dei diversi tipi di vulnerabilità, a volte nascoste o implicite, per affrontare il cambiamento climatico in termini di produzione e riproduzione di (in)giustizia climatica. In questo modo, la società potrebbe gestire al meglio il nuovo orizzonte prodotto dal cambiamento climatico e dai rischi ad esso associati.
Per queste ragioni, questo volume si propone di raccogliere contributi sui diversi impatti dei cambiamenti climatici, strettamente legati alle politiche di gestione, ai possibili scenari futuri, alle politiche e pratiche di adattamento e mitigazione in relazione all’equilibrio tra scenari passati e cambiamenti climatici attuali in Europa, in particolar modo nell’area del Mediterraneo. L’obiettivo principale che guida questa Call multidisciplinare è la raccolta e il confronto fra esperienze e conoscenze prodotte da tutti i campi di ricerca coinvolti nella promozione di una certa discussione teorica, la quale può aiutare sia a comprendere meglio le conseguenze dei cambiamenti climatici da una prospettiva transfrontaliera e transnazionale, sia tradurre questa riflessione in efficaci soluzioni applicate di mitigazione dei cambiamenti climatici e di adattamento tramite politiche e pratiche adeguate.
Gli argomenti principali su cui ci si aspetta di ricevere delle proposte per caratterizzare questo volume, ma ai quali non limitiamo le eventuali proposte di contributo, sono:
– gli impatti associati ai cambiamenti climatici, come l’aumento delle temperature, l’alterazione dei modelli di precipitazioni o l’innalzamento del livello del mare;
– le politiche europee e nazionali esistenti o in attesa di approvazione in materia di cambiamenti climatici, le misure sociali di mitigazione e adattamento e i possibili scenari per l’intera area di studio;
– ogni tipo di misure/azioni di prevenzione, adattamento, sensibilizzazione e preparazione sostenute da istituzioni, stakeholder e comunità locali per affrontare la crisi climatica;
– questioni di giustizia climatica legate a possibili “migrazioni climatiche” o ai cambiamenti nelle soluzioni abitative e nelle infrastrutture, compreso l’uso di nature-based solutions;
– la comunicazione pubblica e la percezione sociale dell’incertezza associata ai cambiamenti climatici, analizzando come i diversi attori, compresa la società civile, inquadrino la situazione attuale e considerino le possibili soluzioni di mitigazione e adattamento.
Di conseguenza, questo volume vorrebbe attrarre l’attenzione di una vasta gamma di scienziati “duri” e sociali, ma anche dei decisori politici, dei portatori di interesse, delle associazioni di varia natura e dei cittadini.
