This book listens to Istanbul through the ears of those who visited it. Drawing on the travel writing of Edmondo De Amicis, Giuseppe Antonio Borgese, Corrado Alvaro, it recovers a city alive with noise: the cry of street vendors, the echo of calls to prayer drifting across the Bosphorus, the clatter of traffic, the mingled voices of a metropolis poised between worlds and centuries. Without intending to do so, these writers became attentive observers of the city’s auditory environment, their pages dense with impressions that no instrument consistently measured and that only fragmentary archives retain. Yet their testimony is not neutral. Every sound they record is filtered through cultural expectations, narrative conventions, and the particular estrangement of the foreign ear encountering the unfamiliar. To read them closely is to understand not only how Istanbul sounded, but how it was made to sound, shaped by imagination, ideology, and the long tradition of writing the East. Bringing together literary analysis and sound studies, this volume offers a first step toward a more systematic engagement with literary texts as sources for reconstructing the sensory dimensions of urban pasts.

Clara Di Fazio

Geografia della Mobilità Aerea.

Rappresentazione, evoluzione, spazi e dinamiche del trasporto aereo contemporane

979-12-80064-88-2

Year: 2025

Series: Geographies of the Anthropocene

Pages: 446;

Language: Italian;

Format: e-book;

Download e-book

Description

This volume explores the spatial, social, and technological dimensions of contemporary air mobility through a geographical and transdisciplinary lens. Moving beyond the traditional conception of airports as mere transit spaces or “non-places,” the study interprets them as complex social systems where infrastructures, digital technologies, and human practices intersect. Focusing on the Italian context—largely unexplored compared to the Anglophone literature—the research examines the evolution of air transport and airport spaces as laboratories for observing transformations in global mobility and territoriality.

Through surveys and interviews with airport workers and institutional actors, the investigation highlights the coexistence of operational, cultural, and emotional dimensions within airport environments. The findings reveal that airports, while functioning as key nodes of global flows, also operate as community ecosystems in which belonging, cooperation, and local identity emerge. The study offers a critical re-evaluation of Augé’s “non-place,” reframing airports as hyper-places (Lussault), where social, political, and economic dynamics converge.

By integrating qualitative and quantitative data, the research underscores the strategic role of digitalization, sustainability, and governance in reshaping the air transport sector. In a world increasingly shaped by systemic crises, protracted conflicts, and new geographies of interdependence, cultural attraction is conceptualized as a strategic resource and as an alternative to coercive paradigms of power. Italy projects influence through a centuries-old reservoir of cultural capital rooted in the legacy of Roman civilization, the Renaissance, and contemporary diasporic networks. Italian soft power operates across transnational educational, symbolic, and diasporic circuits, sustained by a decentralized and reticular model of cultural diplomacy that strengthens Italy’s agency within the international system. The study advances an interpretation of Italian civilization as a geocultural actor, the living embodiment of a diffuse humanism capable of generating symbolic proximity and cooperative engagement within a post-national order. Italy thus emerges as a form of gentle power: a credible mediator in an increasingly polarized and fluid geopolitical landscape.

Alberto Miccoli

Fenua, la Terra-Madre

Pluralismo giuridico e indigenizzazione del diritto fondiario in Polinesia Francese

ISBN 979-12-80064-77-6

Year: 2025;

Series: Geographies of the Anthropocene

Pages: 176;

Language: Italian;

Format: e-book;

Download e-book

Description

The area known today as French Polynesia – composed of five archipelagos in the Pacific Ocean – was settled between the 9th and 10th centuries AD during Austronesian migrations, and was later mapped by Europeans in the 18th century, with the arrival of the first missionaries in 1797. After initial interference with the local socio-political organization, it gradually became a French protectorate in 1842 and was progressively annexed to France starting in 1880. Since 1984, the territory has enjoyed internal autonomy status.

The introduction of Western law into local social organization practices led to a slow transformation of the precolonial land tenure system. In terms of land ownership, the publication of the first written legal codes privatized and capitalized land ownership, legally stripping the land (Fenua) of its identity-based value and its genealogical connection with its inhabitants.

These changes, however, clash with the strong resilience of the local population, which reinterprets European legal instruments and asserts the right to enjoy undivided property rights. It is not uncommon for these islands to face major challenges in managing their territory, which is typically characterized by a limited volume of activities, a strong cultural identity, and the vulnerability of the natural environment. These conditions necessitate a targeted management approach that is sensitive to both development and conservation needs.
This study examines the case of Procida, which was designated the Italian Capital of Culture in 2022. Through a transdisciplinary methodological approach, including interviews with residents and stakeholders, it analyzes how this major event was managed, the opportunities it provided, and the challenges encountered. By exploring Procida’s potential as a laboratory for innovation and sustainable development, this research aims to assess the implemented program and identify best practices that can serve as a reference for similar contexts. Women are depicted not merely as laborers but as creators and stewards of diverse, often “marginalized,” spaces.
Moving the discussion from the EU’s and Italian’s normative frameworks and official data sources, the study maps the different associations and entities involved and advocating for women’s roles in viticulture, analyzing both production and valorization on a national scale. It aims to offer a deeper understanding of the complexities which surround women’s participation and challenges in the field of viticulture, laying the groundwork for future research and deeper reflection, especially in light of climate change effects.
In order to contribute to the field of geography, the research highlights the spatial dimension of the intersectional vulnerability faced by women in Italian viticulture. The idea is to inspect women’s roles in the construction of alternative spaces, adding a crucial dimension (gender) into the understanding of the evolution of human geography and cultural landscapes. Despite a lack of literature and detailed data, the research intends to open the way for further inquiries and to introduce analytical elements to the existing debate. This approach is anchored in official statistics, observations, questionnaires, and interviews conducted since 2018. The results acknowledge the contributions of all participants, aiming to present a novel perspective within a heavily scrutinized domain, transcending prevalent marketing narratives associated with “liberal feminism” and stereotypes. The exploration presents a richly diverse context, characterized by varied experiences and narratives. The research does not seek definitive answers, but generally aims to define a new paradigm on the cultural, social, and environmental dimensions that construct societal “spatiality.” Ultimately, this essay invites readers to engage in a critical way with the intersectional dynamics shaping women’s experiences in viticulture and fostering a deeper understanding of the diverse roles they play within this intricate ecosystem.

Gaetano Sabato

Communities and Cruise Ship Tourism
A Geographical Perspective on the Cases of Palermo and Siracusa,
Sicily

ISBN 979-12-80064-69-1

Year: 2024;

Series: Geographies of the Anthropocene

Pages: 67;

Language: English;

Format: e-book;

Download e-book

Description

The ways in which a community (re)produces specific images of cruise ship tourism include cultural and physical (urban) landscapes, conflicts, strategies of resilience that semantize peculiar spaces through private (and public) narrations. By using a cultural geographical approach, this book aims to investigate this dynamic. Starting from fieldwork conducted using participant observation and including some interviews this work aims to analyze the ways in which the communities of two cruise destinations in Sicily (Italy), Palermo and Siracusa, perceive the cruise tourism and the passengers who disembark as tourists, especially in the period of crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Both of the two communities are exposed to cruises with a different maturity. The perceptions of the host
communities and their narratives are here reconstructed through the contextualization of cruise tourism in the two Sicilian destinations.

Daniela Santus e Elisa Pugliese

Frammenti di paesaggio

Geografia, turismo e sostenibilità in Germania

ISBN 979-12-80064-67-7

Year: 2024;

Series: Geographies of the Anthropocene

Pages: 195;

Language: Italian;

Format: e-book;

Download e-book

Description

Divided into eleven chapters, this volume aims to provide readers with a geo-cultural analysis of contemporary Germany from a multidisciplinary perspective, encompassing history, geography, and environmental challenges.
It is a journey with multiple stops: from Luther to the reunification of the country, and on to the challenges of the present day, exploring the diversity of landscapes, issues related to an aging population and the opportunities brought by immigration, the fight against antisemitism, climate change, sustainability, and tourism. Particular attention is given to nature conservation strategies and the transition toward sustainable energy sources, as well as best practices in urban biodiversity. Tourism is also analyzed through the lens of sustainability: from the post-Covid recovery to marketing strategies, from the specifics of cultural holidays and natural destinations—such as the Wadden Sea or UNESCO World Heritage routes—to the Wine Routes and the Fairy Tale Route, a one-of-a-kind cultural itinerary that illustrates how sustainable policies can enrich the tourist experience and the lives of citizens.
In other words, this is a book written to inspire reflection and provoke thought about a country that has come to terms with its past and risen from its ashes—a country at times complex, at times welcoming, but always worth discovering: Germany.

Charli-e Galibert

Art et anthropocène
Codex Scholtensis

Création et Apocalypse selon Armand Scholtès

ISBN 979-12-80064-62-2

Year: 2024;

Series: Geographies of the Anthropocene

Pages: 561;

Language: French;

Format: e-book;

Download e-book

Description

This Codex is a compendium that aspires to accompany the reading of the Work of Armand Scholtes (1935–2023), inviting the reader to an intense engagement of reflection and cultivation around the very genesis of creation and its continuity over more than 60 years of daily artistic activity.
This body of work (https://www.armandscholtes.com/) represents a continuous variation between creation and destruction, beginning and disappearance, Origin and Apocalypse.
Its reading of the Anthropocene serves as both a cosmogony (elements, colors, forms, movement) and a cosmology (a History of the Creation of the Physical World). The first Section discusses on urban transformation through the skyline, a “comprehensive landscape”; the second Section explores the urban parks and gardens and their historical evolution, conflicts between groups and gentrification processes, dealing with some opportunities provided by new laws that address climate issues and the revitalization of the city. The fourth Section studies the relationship between city and food, in relation to social and symbolic topics, while the fifth Section returns a specific contemporary drama, connected to the Covid-19, narrating the pandemic effects on the social structure and on the New Yorkers homeless.

Federico Volpe

STORIA UMANISTICA DELLA NATURA
UN’ANTOLOGIA LETTERARIA, ARTISTICA E MUSICALE

ISBN 979-12-80064-43-1

Year: 2023;

Series: Geographies of the Anthropocene

Pages: 190;

Language: Italian;

Format: e-book;

Download e-book

Description

The present volume aims at reconstructing the history of man-nature relationship among the various forms of art. The studies about the Anthropocene era, always more developed during the last years, led to some important and accurate researches on the presence and the impact of man on Earth. These studies include all the vast and complex considerations about pollution, climate, energy and so on. But every discourse that focuses on the features and the problems of the Anthropocene has maybe at its base a fundamental theme, a fil rouge from which it cannot be separated: the relationship between man and nature. The evolution of this relationship among the centuries influenced and, in turn, was influenced by the innovations that marked the history of homo sapiens from a scientific and technological point of view. Nevertheless, man-nature relationship has always been a central theme also in the artistic and literary production of man himself, who ‘dedicated’ to nature an endless list of texts, poems, pictures, sculptures, and musical compositions. What this volume wants to do is to retrace the evolution of the nature and of the relationship between man and nature in the history of the arts, that is to analyse how man represented the nature in the figurative arts, in the music, and in the literature, considering the so-called “western” world. In order to do that, the volume will cross the centuries and will focus on the various themes and concepts that man associated to the nature — from love to religion, from humour to death. In this way, hopefully, it will be possible to offer some points for reflection on the culture of the contemporary world too, in which there is the constant return of themes and leitmotifs that accompanied man and his art since the origin of the art itself.

Eleonora Gioia

LE PROSPETTIVE GEOGRAFICHE DELLA RIDUZIONE DEL RISCHIO DISASTRI: COMUNITÀ, GOVERNANCE, SOSTENIBILITÀ AMBIENTALE E RISORSE ECONOMICHE

ISBN 979-12-80064-42-4

Year: 2023
Series: Geographies of the Anthropocene
Pages: 203
Language: Italian
Format: e-book

Download e-book

Description

Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) requires community empowerment and participation, through coordination mechanisms in all sectors and at all social and institutional levels. However, DRR strategies usually focus on a few or single elements, due to a series of barriers, mostly institutional, but also cognitive, economic, and social, which lead to the lack of a decisive overall vision for risk management. This monographic work presents a DRR analysis methodology called “CO.G.EN.S.” and tested through the European Life Project “PRIMES”. This system of indicators assesses the achievement of flood risk reduction objectives in four thematic areas that share a geographical perspective: community engagement (CO), governance capacity and institutional compliance (G), environmental sustainability (EN) and economic resources (S).

The analysis showed that the involvement of the local population and the cooperation between the institutions have improved thanks to the Project, thus increasing flood risk awareness and social cohesion. However, the Project activities did not have direct effects on the environmental and socio-economic areas. To improve flood risk reduction efforts, it is suggested to enhance the involvement of all community actors, with a role of coordination and homogenization of warning procedures by institutions, the integration of climatological data by scientists and technicians, and the education of citizens regarding flood risk and adaptation to climate change. The CO.G.EN.S. indicator system has proven to be effective and comprehensive, with an objective, transversal and multidisciplinary assessment of risk reduction. The methodology is also modular and easily replicable in other contexts, potentially suitable for comparing DRR strategies applied to different types of risk and at different territorial scales.

Charlie Galibert

ANTHROPOCÈNE ET ESTHÉTIQUE DE LA DOMINATION
Le nu et le corps dans l’art

ISBN 979-12-80064-31-8

Year: 2022
Series: Geographies of the Anthropocene
Pages: 381
Language: French
Format: e-book

Download e-book

Description

The Anthropocene unfolds its generalized domination and exploitation of the world through internal exclusion (what is not man) and external exclusion (nature, the non-human). This episteme of the objectification of humans, non-humans and the World, passes through language, writing, the male gaze as a Vision of the world promoted to universality. Domination is expressed in art by a violence that does not say its name by draping itself in candid nudity, the image of beauty and naturalness, thus making art the very place of its most beautiful lie. The aesthetics of domination makes the Anthropocene an anthropoScene, in which gendered functioning gives the body a central role. The historical examination of this aesthetics of domination disguised as the domination of aesthetics (painting, sculpture, happening, writing) and its questioning by the opposition/feminine and feminist demarcation of the 60s-70s and beyond, leads, by following the evolution of contemporary art, to the proposal of a possible elsewhere of the gendered heart of the functioning of the Anthropocene, by the call for a new alliance between the Human (post gender) and the Living (animated and inanimate nature) by providing some keys for the construction of the Human-as-counter-project in the Anthropocene, shared with the Living and the Planet by respecting and meeting all otherness, internal and external.

Livio Perra

IL GENOCIDIO CULTURALE

ISBN 979-12-80064-32-5

Year: 2022

Series: Geographies of the Anthropocene
Pages: 103
Language: Italian
Format: e-book

Download e-book

Description

This monograph analyses the cultural genocide. It is perpetrated through the direct attack on cultural heritage with the intent of destroying a human group. The category of cultural genocide, although foreseen in the first formulation of the definition of genocide, does not have much luck. In international texts aimed at preventing and punishing genocide, only physical and biological genocide are mentioned. Nevertheless, interest in this category does not cease to exist. The phenomenon is analysed by the doctrine in numerous writings. The Supreme National Tribunal of Poland, in the 1946 judgment, defining the Poland v. Greiser, qualifies certain acts as cultural genocide. More recently, in 2016, the International Criminal Court condemns Al Mahdi for the destruction of cultural properties, applying the discipline established at the international level for the protection of cultural property in armed conflicts. In 2015, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, in its final report, defines the policies implemented by the Canadian government regarding indigenous peoples and, in particular the phenomenon of residential schools, as cultural genocide. The author, after having outlined the category of cultural genocide, comes to the conclusion that using this category can allow to contrast the direct attack on cultural heritage perpetrated with the aim of destroying a human group.

Andrea Nocera

VERDE MERAVIGLIA
IMMAGINARE UN NUOVO MODO DI ABITARE

ISBN 979-12-80064-23-3

Year: 2021
Pages: 142
Language: Italian
Format: e-book

Download e-book

Description

«What kind of world has a place for us and for everything else both now and for future generations? In these systems, there is a transition from anthropocentrism to biocentrism. In particular, nature becomes a subject of rights. These systems are the result of the reflections that emerged in political and legal debates, due to the entry of the values of the indigenous peoples’ culture, where nature is of considerable importance. The author investigates the genesis of these environmental protection systems and how the cultures of the peoples who make up the States found equal space to express their values. The environmental protection systems of Ecuador and Bolivia appear as complete: legal systems recognize nature as a subject, affirm its rights and there is a wide range of judicial instruments and actions to claim in respect of them. After analyzing these systems in all their parts, the author addresses the issues that emerged. From the analysis carried out in this monograph, the fact that emerges is that the rights of nature constitute an effective way to defend the environment. Culture becomes the key to dealing with current environmental questions and contributes to the evolution of law. Law is able to renew itself, abandon anthropocentric logics, rethink categories and build two new and complete environmental protection systems.

Eleonora Gioia
Fausto Marincioni
Maurizio Ferretti

MODELING LANDSLIDE HAZARD IN THE ESINO RIVER VALLEY (CENTRAL ITALY)

ISBN 979-12-80064-11-0

Year: 2021
Pages: 206
Language: English
Format: e-book

Download e-book

Description

Modeling landslide hazard is among the forecast activities of the Civil Protection system. Usually, scientific literature that aims to determine rainfall thresholds for the possible occurrence of landslides, tends to rely on two main separate approaches: empirical and physical models. This novel methodology has been applied to the landslides affecting the eastward Esino River Valley, located in the Marche region (central Italy). Post-orogenic quaternary sediments, with approximatively similar hydrogeological properties and prone to rainfall-induced shallow landslides, characterize this 550 km2 wide area.
This volume is divided in four sections focusing on: i) the validation of the correlation between historical landslides and rainfall series; ii) the application of empirical models, namely the cumulative event – duration, the maximum intensity – duration, the mean intensity – duration, and the Bayesian methods; iii) the application of the US Geological Survey’s Transient Rainfall Infiltration and Grid-based Regional Slope-stability (TRIGRS) physical model; iv) the testing of all the above models, during a rainfall event that affected the study area on 2-4 May 2014 and triggered several landslides.
Results of this research are proposed as possible decision support tools for landslide warning.

Charli-e Galibert

L’HOMME DU MONDE
ou « NOUS AUTRES »
Pour une nouvelle alliance entre les vivants

ISBN 979-12-80064-05-9

Year: 2020;
Pages: 152;
Language: French;
Format: e-book;
Publication: December 2020

Download e-book

Description

Western humanism is constituted (anthropologically, historically, philosophically) on a double differentiation-minimization-worsening: internal (managing intrahuman differences: give / men, them/us, whites/blacks, civilized/primitive), and external to the separation from the non-human: (natural nature, Being, the animal …). This essay discusses the results of a research project about risk perception of local communities in Italy involved in the European project “Preventing flooding RIsks by Making resilient communitiES” (www.lifeprimes.eu).
Particular attention was paid to the perception of climate hazards and adaptation processes of such communities, highlighting similarities and differences related to geographical location. Results show a significant improvement in flood resilience for those communities involved in public meetings, exercises and other participatory processes. The study constitutes a strong theoretical basis from which to extend the analysis to other territories, providing the elements for a better management of climate risk in Italy.

The content and opinions expressed in the volumes are the sole responsibility of the author(s) and do not necessarily imply the endorsement or approval of the Publisher.
